It is entirely possible that nobody expected the UK civil war to result in such a bloodbath, It's population of 223 million was decimated. Its history lies in the schism between the growing fascist movements of groups such as the BNP and EDL and the (increasingly) conservative but liberal democracy in Westminster. When an attempted Coup detat killed almost half of the cabinet absolute chaos ensued: London was split in two and the city centre was all but demolished. At first the fighting was small on a general scale but soon concentrated in the south east of the country. As these factions attempted conscription in their respective regions other states began to cede from the Union and the UK disintegrated into city states, which then reformed into other regions. The Church of England both ceded and split into its own civil war, the royal family found themselves in control of a sizeable region spreading west of windsor, and Clacton on sea and a sizeable portion of Essex ceded to Germany. It was to this background that a number of Socialist communities, mainly but by no means exclusively from the north of England and Wales gathered to attempt a full evacuation from the bloodshed (which had by then claimed over 70 milion people, and would claim a further 80 later on).
They formed the United Socialist States of Soviet British Publics, and their community fled across the world in search of peace. They found little, coming across a world tormented by tightening resources and increasingly right-wing views they were driven onwards, and onwards. Until eventually they found themselves at a border guarded on the side they were leaving from heavily, but on the other side by only a few officials with clipboards.
“Welcome to The Happily confused Jumble of Superfishpie” the official told them (OOC: is there any form of proper map? I don’t know of one so if you don’t mind I’ll make up the relative geographies) “we have heard of a migration approaching this way in search of a new homeland, would that be you lot by any chance?”
The temporarily elected speaker (they had not neglected their democratic obligations while on the move), who had formally been a pie factory worker, said “probably, we’ve been wondering for a while, we’re looking for somewhere that would allow our socialist ideals to survive and flourish within our community, if you do not wish us to remain within your borders we would request that you allow us to pass through in our search”.
“You could probably stay in our nation if you would like, but there is a sizeable region of unclaimed land further to the west: it’s very mountainous, heavily forested, with a relatively long coast. I think it’s technically owned by the Utopian islands of Chazzistan but no one there’s inclined to settle in the region, as it was depopulated during a terrible pandemic some years back which vitually wiped out the population of Syndiclasia. The land isn’t particularly fertile but I daresay you could settle there.”
The people were excited at the news and quickly contacted both governments in order to validate the creation of their homeland of the Soviet British Publics. Soon they were settled in a portion of the unclaimed territory in the southwest of the Socialist paradise, with the main mainland town of Chazzistan bordering them to the south and Superfishpie to the east, and with the various other nations of this paradise to the north except the Republic of Assimovia to the west.
The Republic heard rumours that the civil war had ended or at least died down, and that if they returned it may be safe, but less than a hundred thousand even left to see it again, and 80,000 of these went to get family members or their left possessions; and of the 20,000 others over two thirds returned, saying that it was better in the new nation.
And so the Union of Socialist Soviet British Publics became founded.
